Care of Mildly Ill Campers
The child will check in with the camp director/health care supervisor(s) and will be removed from the group and brought into a quiet room (such as the locker room, or the upstairs room on the second floor of the hockey rink) to sit down and drink some water. The camp director/health care supervisor(s) will assess the child’s complaints and assess whether the child wants to rejoin the camp activities or notify the parent/guardian(s) to pick the child up (depending on the illness complaints). Consultation with the HCC may be required. Each event will be documented in the medical log and parent/guardian(s) will be made aware of the situation, even if the child feels better to rejoin the activities.
Medication Administration/Storage
The parent/guardian of any camper with medication that needs to be on-site (such as epi-pens or inhalers) or administered during camp operation hours is required to fill out an Authorization to Administer Medication to Minors at Camp form. This form will allow the parent/guardian to make the decision if the camper is allowed to self-administer the medication and keep it on the camper’s self/within their personal belongings.
The Off Szn Hockey Camp health care supervisors are responsible for ensuring all medications are onsite, stored in original containers and kept in a secure manner. If a camper’s medication needs to be refrigerated, it will be stored at temperatures of 36°F-46°F. The health care supervisors will document the administration of medication by signing a readily available Medical Log.
All unused medications will be returned to parents/guardian(s) of the camper at the end of the camp session. If any medication cannot be returned, the camp director/healthcare supervisor, with a witness, will destroy the medication (or return to a medication disposal kiosk – such as the one at the Quincy Police Department front lobby. Or if the medication is an epi-pen then it will be brought to the Quincy Health Department for disposal due to the needle) and will document in the medical log.
Handling of Health Emergencies
Transportation Method & Notification of parent/guardian(s): The camp staff will immediately notify the camp director/healthcare supervisor(s) who will administer immediate first aid to the child and direct another staff member to call 911, if applicable. The camp director/healthcare supervisor(s) will notify the parent/guardian or emergency contact for the child. If the child needs to be transported by ambulance, a staff member will accompany the child (preferably one of the health care supervisors if both are available on the day of the incident) and will bring the child’s registration information (including physical) to the hospital.
If parent/guardian cannot be contacted: The child will still be transported by ambulance, if applicable, with the camp staff member and the camp director/healthcare supervisor(s) will continue to attempt contact to the child’s emergency contact.
